While at the gym on Wednesday Tyler was at a friends house where he spends most of his time. At 5:30 a guy from the front desk came to tell me, "Rachelle called, your son is OK, but he has had an accident and you need to call her." I picked up my cell phone which I keep in my purse while working and called Dawson's mom. She informed me that Ty had fallen off the treadmill and cut his foot, she thought it needed stitches.
I asked to talk to Ty and asked him if he was OK or if I needed to come get him. His voiced started to tremble as he said, "I need you." That was all I needed! I turned to one of the other instructors, told them my son needed me, collected the other 2 children I had with me, and ran out the door. 15 minutes I arrived at Dawson's house to find Tyler sitting in the front room, being very silly, looking very pale, with a rag on his foot. I took a look at what was underneath and agreed, "yep, that needs a doctor." And we headed off to the local ER.
Brady was working in Park City and for some reason I was unable to reach him, so I called uncle Cory and McKenzie and they met us at the hospital. They took Carter and Trina home with them to eat dinner and play.
All in all for an ER visit it was pretty quick. Ty timed it and it only took 2 1/2 hours. They were afraid the toes were broken at first, but the x-rays showed all bones where intact. Then they started examining the wounds. The cut on the small toe goes almost to the bone, so Dr. Davies thought that would need stitches, but said he needed a closer look, but Tyler needed to be numb 1st.
Ty has been threw the stitches thing before and is very aware what being "numbed" means. He did not want a shot. But he was brave, and allowed them to numb it. The staff was very impressed with his bravery. Despite the screaming from pain, he sat very still and didn't move his leg or foot while they injected the numbing medicine into his foot. The Dr. told him it would only take 3 shots, so after the nurse finished what Tyler was sure had been 10, he was VERY angry when she informed him that had just been one shot that she had to move around inside his foot. That one shot had probably taken 5 minutes, and for anyone who has not had to go threw this, imagine someone pulling off your fingernails while holding a lighter to you finger. It is probably the most excruciating pain I have ever felt, and had a much smaller area of my body done. Just my thumb pad, and I swore and yelled, cried and pitched a royal fit, (and that was only 2 years ago.)
So anyway, once he was numb and the Dr got a good look at it, he began removing the skin that had been torn off. When he was done, he started to work on the deep pinkie cut and found there was not enough skin left to stitch to. So Tyler got his wish and there are no stitches. But his foot is wrapped up like a mummy, with a "funny" little shoe to protect it. It is still very swollen and sore. He needed loratab to sleep the first night, we'll see how tonight goes.
He is very sad that he has had to miss school, so I think we will take him to the Christmas Party tomorrow. So here is a picture of his foot. This was taken today when we changed the bandage. It looks 10x better than yesterday!!
Oh, BTW.. This happened when he was running on the treadmill barefoot and fell. His toe got pulled into the belt. It could have been so much worse, we are grateful the Lord was watching out for him. And he has learned a lesson.... wear shoes when running on treadmills, or as I told him... you are too young for treadmills!!!
